About ADO
Your local builders in Haslemere
ADO Builders is an independent, hands-on building company founded by Alan Oakes, a carpenter with more than twenty years in the trade. From structural work and custom staircases to complete kitchen fit-outs, there’s very little we haven’t built.
Most of our work comes through word of mouth and repeat clients across Surrey. Every job is treated on its own terms: we start by understanding what you actually need from the space, then build it properly.
Haslemere sits in the far south-west of Surrey, surrounded by the Surrey Hills National Landscape. The town mixes a historic centre around the High Street with Victorian and Edwardian villas on its slopes and later homes in Shottermill and Grayswood, so sloping plots and careful, in-keeping design come up on most jobs.
What we do
Our services in Haslemere
House extensions
Single and double storey rear extensions, side returns, infills and wrap-arounds, from groundworks and steels through to roof lanterns, bi-folds and finishes. Sloping plots are common around Haslemere, so groundworks, retaining and levels are planned in from the start.
Kitchens
From straight refits to knocking through into a new extension for open-plan living: steels, underfloor heating, plastering, worktops and the final fit-out. Opening up an older villa into a kitchen-diner usually means steels and careful structural work, planned and built as part of the job.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms, en-suites and wet rooms, including the pipework, drainage and ventilation work that goes with them. Period villas often need pipework, drainage and ventilation updated along with a new bathroom.
Garage conversions
Integral and attached garages turned into home offices, gyms, playrooms or bedrooms, with insulation, damp-proofing, new windows and Building Regulations sign-off. A garage conversion can add a home office without building into a sloping garden.

Local know-how
Planning in Haslemere: what we check for you
Before we price a Haslemere job, we check the local rules that decide what can be built and how.
- Conservation area
Haslemere’s conservation area covers the historic town centre and has an adopted appraisal. Listed buildings in the centre also need listed building consent for many changes.
- Surrey Hills
The Surrey Hills National Landscape surrounds the town, so planners look closely at design, materials and how a building sits in the landscape.
- Planning authority
Waverley Borough Council, until West Surrey Council takes over on 1 April 2027. If your project runs across that date, we keep track of who’s handling it.
- Building Regulations
We make sure approval is in place before work starts and that the job is signed off at the end.

FAQs
Builders in Haslemere: FAQs
Do you work across the whole of Haslemere?
Yes. We take on projects throughout Haslemere and nearby, including Town Centre, Shottermill, Critchmere, Grayswood, as well as across the rest of Surrey.
Does the Surrey Hills National Landscape affect an extension in Haslemere?
It can. Around Haslemere planners pay close attention to design, materials and how an extension sits in the landscape, so we design to suit the house and its setting from the start.
Can you build on a sloping plot?
Yes. Many Haslemere and Hindhead homes sit on sloping ground, so we plan groundworks, levels and drainage early, and that’s reflected in the quote.
Do I need permission for work in Haslemere’s conservation area?
External changes inside the conservation area are more likely to need planning permission, and listed buildings need listed building consent for many internal changes too. We check both before work starts.
Can you do an extension and a new kitchen as one project?
Yes. Combining a rear or side extension with a new kitchen is one of the most common projects we take on, and running it as one job means one programme from groundworks through to worktops.
How do I get a quote for building work in Haslemere?
Call or text 07791 541507, or email alan@adobuilders.co.uk with a few details and photos of the space. We’ll arrange a visit to look at the property and talk through what’s possible.
